Arabic Keyword Research for Ecommerce: A Practical Method for the Gulf
How to find the Arabic keywords your customers in the UAE and the Gulf actually search, using free tools such as Google autocomplete, People also ask, Search Console and competitor analysis.
Short answer: Arabic keyword research starts from your customers' real language, not translation. Use Google autocomplete, the "People also ask" box and your customers' WhatsApp questions, then Google Search Console once you have traffic. Sort every keyword by search intent (buy, compare or learn), and give each main keyword one page.
Why Arabic keywords are different
- Multiple spellings: "شوبيفاي", "شوبفاي" and "Shopify"; "عبايه" and "عباية" (abaya).
- Dialects: "أبي" vs "أريد" (I want), "وين" vs "أين" (where). Product names are often colloquial.
- Mixed Arabic and English: "متجر Shopify دبي" (Shopify store Dubai) is a very common way to search.
- Paid keyword tools usually have weaker Arabic data than English data.
Step 1: start from your customers
Before any tool, write down:
- The questions you get on WhatsApp and Instagram.
- The words customers use to describe your products.
- The problems your product solves.
Example for a perfume store: "دهن عود أصلي" (genuine oud oil), "عطر يثبت طول اليوم" (long-lasting perfume), "عطور شتوية" (winter perfumes), "هدية عطر للرجال" (perfume gift for men).
Step 2: Google autocomplete
Type the start of a phrase into Google (in a private window, with your location set to the UAE) and note the suggestions:
- "دهن عود …" (oud oil…) → genuine, Cambodian, prices, Dubai
- "عباية …" (abaya…) → black, linen, formal, embroidered
Add letters after the phrase ("دهن عود ا", "دهن عود ب") to surface more suggestions.
Step 3: "People also ask"
The "People also ask" box in Google is a goldmine for FAQs and articles. Each question can become:
- A question in the FAQ block on a collection page.
- An H2 in an article.
- A full article, if the question is big enough.
Step 4: analyse the competition
Search your main keywords and see who ranks:
- Freelancers and service listings? A strong opportunity for real content.
- Big stores with collection pages? You need a stronger collection page.
- Old or translated articles? Write something newer and more accurate.
Step 5: classify by intent
| Intent | Example | Right page |
|---|---|---|
| Buy | "دهن عود كمبودي دبي" (Cambodian oud oil Dubai) | Collection or product page |
| Compare | "أفضل دهن عود" (best oud oil) | Collection page with comparison content, or an article |
| Learn | "كيف أعرف دهن العود الأصلي" (how to tell real oud oil) | Blog article |
A common mistake: writing an article for a buying keyword, or using a product page for a learning keyword.
Step 6: one keyword per page
Give each main keyword one page on your store. Two pages targeting the same keyword compete with each other and weaken both. Keep a simple map:
| Keyword | Page | Type |
|---|---|---|
| دهن عود كمبودي | /collections/cambodian-oud | Collection |
| كيف أعرف دهن العود الأصلي | /blog/real-oud-oil | Article |
Step 7: Google Search Console
Once your content is live, Search Console shows the queries you actually appear for, how often and at what position. Look for:
- Keywords where you rank 8–20: improve the page and push it onto page one.
- Unexpected keywords: write dedicated content for them.
Useful tools
- Google itself: autocomplete and "People also ask".
- Google Search Console: your real site data, free.
- Google Trends: compare interest between terms, and seasons such as Ramadan.
- Google Keyword Planner: approximate search volumes (needs an ads account).
- Paid tools such as Semrush and Ahrefs for competition and volume, though less accurate in Arabic.
After the research: what next?
Turn the list into a content plan: collection pages first (buying intent), then articles that answer questions and link to collections. See the full approach in Shopify SEO in Arabic, and don't forget GEO for AI search.
