Shipping From the UAE to the GCC: A Store Owner's Guide to Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman

How to ship store orders from the UAE to the rest of the GCC, covering couriers, customs and duties, currencies and pricing in Shopify, delivery times and returns.

Updated: · 3 min read

Short answer: you can sell from your UAE store to every GCC country. You need a courier that covers the Gulf (such as Aramex, DHL or others), markets and currencies set up in Shopify for each country, complete clarity on customs and taxes and who pays them, honest delivery times, and a practical return policy for international orders.

Why sell to the GCC?

The UAE is a strong market, but Saudi Arabia is the Gulf's largest ecommerce market, and Kuwait and Qatar have high purchasing power. Many UAE brands multiply their sales when they open shipping to the GCC.

Step 1: choose a courier

Courier Note
Aramex Wide GCC coverage and ecommerce experience
DHL, FedEx and UPS Fast, usually at a higher cost
Emirates Post An economical option depending on destination
Regional fulfillment centres Some have warehouses in several countries

Get weight-based rates for each country, and check the courier's Shopify integration.

Step 2: markets and currencies in Shopify

In Shopify you can set up a market for each country or group of countries:

  • Currency: Saudi riyal for Saudi Arabia, dinar for Kuwait, and so on.
  • Prices: automatic conversion, or fixed prices per market.
  • Language: Arabic and English.
  • Shipping: different rates and times per country.

A shopper in Riyadh sees prices in riyals, which builds trust and conversion.

Step 3: customs and taxes

When shipping to another country:

  • Customs duties and import taxes may apply, depending on country, product and value.
  • Each shipment needs a commercial invoice.
  • Some products have restrictions in certain countries (such as some cosmetics and alcohol-based perfumes).

Most important: tell shoppers before they pay who pays the duties: you (duties-included shipping) or the customer on delivery. A surprise at the door means a refused delivery.

Customs and tax rules differ across GCC countries and change. Confirm with your courier and each country's official authorities.

Step 4: delivery times

Show delivery times per country on product and shipping pages, for example "Saudi Arabia: 3–5 business days". Honesty here beats a promise you can't keep.

Step 5: international returns

Returns from another country are expensive. Options:

  • Exchanges instead of refunds.
  • Store credit instead of cash refunds.
  • Clear rules on who pays return shipping.

Payments for GCC shoppers

Tabby and Tamara also operate in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and cards and Apple Pay run through your gateway. Check that your gateway accepts cards issued in other GCC countries and at what fee. See Shopify payment gateways in the UAE.

When do you need stock in Saudi Arabia?

Once Saudi orders become a large share of sales, holding part of your stock inside Saudi Arabia through a local fulfillment provider cuts delivery time, cost and customs per order. See ecommerce fulfillment in the UAE.
