Migrating to Shopify From Salla, Zid or WooCommerce Without Losing Your Google Rankings

A step-by-step guide to migrating to Shopify, covering what transfers and what gets rebuilt, 301 redirects to protect SEO, moving customers and orders, and a pre-launch checklist.

Short answer: migrating to Shopify has five stages: move the data (products, customers, orders), rebuild the design, redirect old URLs to new ones (301 redirects) so you keep your Google rankings, connect payments, shipping and tracking, then switch the domain. The step people get wrong most is redirects, and skipping them can wipe out years of SEO.

Why merchants move to Shopify

  • They want custom design that sets them apart.
  • They sell, or plan to sell, in several countries.
  • They're tired of WooCommerce maintenance, plugins and hosting.
  • They need more accurate ad tracking.

What transfers and what gets rebuilt?

Item Transfers? How
Products, images and prices Yes CSV or a migration tool
Variants (sizes, colours) Yes Needs careful review
Customers Yes CSV (passwords don't transfer)
Past orders Usually Migration tool
Reviews Usually A reviews app with import
Design No Rebuilt
Pages and articles Yes Copy or migration tool
Apps and plugins No Shopify alternatives, or built into the theme

Stage 1: inventory and planning

Before moving anything:

  • Export every URL on your current site: products, categories, pages and articles.
  • Identify the pages that get Google traffic in Google Search Console.
  • List the apps you rely on, and an alternative for each.

Stage 2: move the data

  • Move products first and review variants, images and descriptions in Arabic and English.
  • Move customers. Note: passwords don't transfer, so customers need to reactivate their accounts. Prepare a friendly message for them.
  • Move past orders if you need the history.

Stage 3: build the store

This is your chance to build a better store than before: proper Arabic, faster pages, fewer apps. See Arabic Shopify store.

Stage 4: redirects (most important for SEO)

Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its new equivalent:

Old URL New URL
/product/oud-oil-12ml /products/oud-oil-12ml
/category/perfumes /collections/perfumes
/blog/oud-guide /blogs/news/oud-guide

In Shopify: Content → Menus → URL Redirects, where you can upload them as a CSV.

Without redirects: old URLs in Google return "page not found", and your rankings collapse.

Stage 5: payments, shipping and tracking

Stage 6: launch and switch the domain

  • Pick a quiet time, not mid-campaign or mid-season.
  • Point the domain to Shopify.
  • Submit the new sitemap in Search Console.
  • Watch 404 errors for two weeks and add any missing redirects.

Pre-launch checklist

  • All products and variants moved and reviewed
  • Every important old URL has a 301 redirect
  • A successful test order with every payment method
  • Shipping connected and sending tracking numbers
  • Pixels recording events correctly
  • Meta titles and descriptions carried over
  • A message to customers about the new store

FAQ

Will I lose my Google rankings when moving to Shopify?

How long does a migration take?

It depends on product count and complexity. A small to medium store can move in one to two weeks, including design.

Do customer accounts and passwords transfer?
